A proposed class action was filed against a health care system for allegedly failing to adequately protect patients’ private information.

The class action lawsuit was filed in the Madison County Circuit Court by plaintiff Deborah Weiss, individually and on behalf of all others similarly situated, against Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS).

Wiess alleges HSHS allowed hackers to access its systems on Aug. 29, resulting in the exposure of her and other patients’ private information. The breach has reportedly increased the risk of identity theft for the affected individuals.

The lawsuit also accuses HSHS of not adhering to contractually agreed-upon, federally-prescribed, industry-standard security procedures.

The plaintiff seeks a judgment in excess of $50,000. She is represented by attorney Joshua Edelson of Gianaris Trial Lawyers in Alton.
