Railroad Workers and Toxic Encephalopathy
Toxic encephalopathy is a neurological disorder which refers to brain dysfunction at the hands of toxic exposure. It is most common in industries with chronic exposure to heavy metals, such as the railroad industry. It is also caused by solvents and degreasers as the chemicals in them trichloroethylene, toluene, benzene, and xylene, are used as cleaners and for maintenance purposes of railroad equipment. Toxic encephalopathy can also be caused by diesel exhaust, which contains particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that may also lead to the effects of cognitive decline. Lastly, pesticides and herbicides used to control vegetation along railroad tracks, such as organophosphates, carbamates, and glyphosates can also be contributors to toxic encephalopathy. Toxic encephalopathy symptoms vary in severity on the basis of the type and amount of toxin, as well as the duration of exposure. Symptoms can include dizziness, nausea, memory loss, confusion, mood swings, impaired judgment, fatigue, weakness, and seizures, among other things. The symptoms of toxic encephalopathy can be reversed with proper actions, such as medications, supportive care, and neurorehabilitation.
